The Cock Tavern

The Cock Tavern Heritage Pub is a descended by continuous licence from an old 18th century Coaching Inn. Set in the traditional idiom, you will instantly feel at home in the old world surroundings of Liscannor slated floors, old oak and pine beams fused together with brick and granite walls and warm wooden floors.

Loads of natural character, ambience and vitality here! But to see this premises at its most magical, a nocturnal visit is obligatory when the old heritage pub is buzzing with activity, pulsating with atmosphere and reverberating to the sounds of laughter and craic. But our daytime visitor can enjoy a saunter around the pub which will rapidly become a journey back through time as you encounter hordes of artefacts from yesteryear that reflect a simpler, more uncomplicated Ireland.

We are justifiably proud of our All-American Eatery…. and why not, we were the first premises to introduce the American barfood concept to Ireland. Great value can be had here on our Lunchtime Special Menu or if you would prefer something more substantial, then nobody, but nobody is going to beat our comprehensive American Eatery menu. And that’s a promise...

A Bit of History

It has long been a cherished Fingallian boast that ‘Swords was a city when Dublin was but a village’. This dates back to the 6th century and the ancient monastery that St. Columba founded here having dedicated in Gaelic a ‘sord’, a pure well from which the area takes its name. Around this famous monastery grew up the city of ‘Columb Kille’ In the Middle Ages Swords was famous for the quality of its Inns and it is from the late medieval period that we first find in medieval English historic mention of ‘Ye Signe of Ye Cock’, which later became the Cock Tavern. In the 18th century, The Cock Tavern was a very important Coaching Inn complete with farrier’s yard and stables that enabled coach passengers to disembark for refreshments or indeed to sojourn overnight as the densely wooded areas from River Valley to The Naul then harboured some of Ireland’s most notorious highwaymen. Today the Cock Tavern has rededicated itself to preserving this unique historic legacy by declaring itself a genuine ‘Heritage Pub’.
