Howth Special Amenity Area Order

Dublin has one of the most spectacular settings of anyy European capital and Howth is arguably the brightest jewel in that setting.

The Howth Peninsula and nearby Island's Eye contain scenery and habitats as fine as any in the country. The Howth Special Amenity Area Order is a recognition of the quality of the area. To receive this designation an area must be of either outstanding natural beauty or it must have special recreation value or it must be an area where there is a need for nature conservation.

In the case of Howth most of the designated areas meet all of the three criteria for designation. The Howth has a total area of 547 hectares. This comprises Island's Eye (28 hectares)  and the heathlands, woods, cliffs and wooded residential areas of the southeastern half of the Peninsula (519 hectares)
